About Oud Attar
Oud (also spelled "oudh" or "aoud") comes from the resinous heartwood of Aquilaria trees infected by a specific mould (Phialophora parasitica). The tree responds by producing a dense, dark, aromatic resin — and it is this resin that, when steam-distilled, yields pure oud oil.
Only about 2% of wild Aquilaria trees produce oud naturally, and quality oud requires decades of resin accumulation. This scarcity — combined with extraordinary complexity of scent — makes oud one of the costliest natural materials on earth, sometimes more expensive than gold by weight.
Ayooh Naturals sources sustainably produced oud — supporting responsible cultivation of Aquilaria trees rather than depletion of wild forests.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is oud attar?
Oud attar (also called agarwood oil or oudh) is an oil distilled from the resinous heartwood of infected Aquilaria trees. When certain Aquilaria trees are infected by a specific mould, they produce a dark, aromatic resin in self-defence — this resin is oud. It is one of the most expensive natural ingredients in the world.
Why is oud so expensive?
Wild agarwood trees that produce oud resin are rare and take decades to form. Only a small percentage of Aquilaria trees produce the coveted resin. The distillation process is long and the yield is very low — premium oud can command prices comparable to gold by weight.
How does oud attar smell?
Oud has a complex, layered scent — smoky, woody, sweet, and slightly animalistic with balsamic undertones. Indian oud tends to be earthier and sweeter; Middle Eastern oud is more refined and resinous. It is deeply masculine but worn by all genders in South Asia and the Middle East.
How do I use oud attar?
Apply a very small amount — one drop — to pulse points: wrists, inner elbow, side of neck. Oud is extremely concentrated and long-lasting (12–24 hours). Start with less than you think you need. It projects strongly and softens over time into a beautiful base note.
Is oud attar halal?
Yes. Oud attar is 100% alcohol-free — pure natural plant-derived oil in a sandalwood or carrier oil base. It is universally considered halal and is widely used across the Muslim world.
