Frequently Asked Questions
Why do you need to dilute essential oils?
Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts — applying them neat (undiluted) to skin can cause chemical burns, sensitisation reactions, and permanent skin damage. A carrier oil reduces the concentration to a safe level while still delivering the therapeutic benefit. The carrier also slows evaporation, keeping the oil on the skin longer.
What is the standard essential oil dilution ratio?
2% is the standard safe ratio for adults — this means 2 drops of essential oil per 1 teaspoon (5ml) of carrier oil, or 6 drops per 1 tablespoon (15ml). For facial use, use 1%. For children, use 0.5–1%. Always start at the lower end and increase only if well tolerated.
Which carrier oil is best for essential oil dilution?
Jojoba and fractionated coconut oil are the most neutral — they have no scent, absorb well, and don't interfere with the essential oil's aroma or properties. Sweet almond is ideal for massage. For anti-aging blends, use rosehip. For hair treatments, use argan or castor blended with a lighter oil.
Can I mix essential oils in the same carrier?
Yes. Create blends by mixing multiple essential oils in a single carrier. The 2% rule applies to the total essential oil content across all oils — so if you use lavender + frankincense + cedarwood, the total combined drops should equal your target dilution percentage.
